Montreal, the second largest Canadian city, took its name from Mount Royal, the hill located in the heart of the city.
It is believed that the Iroquoians inhabited this area from 14th century, but due to unknown issues they left three hundreds years later. At the beginning of 17th century the French explorer Samuel de Champlain established a fur trading post there. Ville-Marie (that was the first name of the new trading post) became a center of fur trade and a base of further French exploration in North America.
Today it is inhabited by 2 million people. In 2002 Montreal was merged with the 27 surrounding municipalities. The merged suburbs were resistant and two years later, in 2004, some of them, totalling 13% of the population, voted to leave the unified city.

Montreal, drugie największe kanadyjskie miasto, wziął swą nazwę od Góry Royal, wzgórza położonego w centrum miasta.
Uważa się, iż Irokezi zamieszkali ten rejon w XIV w., jednakże z nieznanych przyczyn odeszli gdzie indziej trzysta lat później. Na początku XVII w. francuski badacz Samuel de Champlain założył w tym miejscu placówkę handlującą futrami. Ville-Marie (tak brzmiała pierwsza nazwa placówki) stała się centrum handlu futrami oraz bazą do dalszej ekspansji Francuzów w Ameryce Północnej.
Dzisiaj miasto to jest zamieszkane przez 2 miliony ludzi. W 2002 Montreal połączył się z 27 sąsiadującymi miastami. Scalone obrzeża zaprotestowały i dwa lata później, w 2004, kilkanaście z nich, zamieszkałych przez 13% populacji, zadecydowało o odłączeniu się od zunifikowanego miasta.
