Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean formed by a double chain of twenty-six atolls. It stands about 700 kilometres south-west of Sri Lanka and 400 kilometres south-west of India. Its population of 328 000 inhabits 200 of its 1 192 islands. Maldives' capital and largest city Malé.

Maldives is the smallest Asian country in both population and land area. With an average ground level of 1,5 metres above sea level, it is the planet's lowest country and is ranked the third most endangered nation due to flooding from climate change.

Maldives was largely terra incognita for tourists until the early 1970s. In just three and a half decades, the industry became the main source of income. As of 2007, over 8 380 000 tourists had visited Maldives.

Znajduje się ono oko 700 km na południowy-zachód od Sri Lanki oraz 400 km od południowego-zachodu Indii. Populacja Malediwów liczy 328 000 ludzi, zamieszkujących 200 z całkowitej liczby 1 192 wysp. Stolicą oraz największym miastem jest Malé.

Malediwy to najmniejsze państwo azjatyckie zarówno pod względem populacji, jak i obszaru. Średnia wysokość nad poziomem morza rzędu 1,5 metra sprawia, iż jest to najniżej położone państwo na świecie. Jest także przy tym trzecim z kolei krajem zagrożonym zatopieniem spowodowanym ociepleniem klimatu.

Malediwy były nieznane turystom do wczesnych lat 70'. W ciągu zaledwie 3 i pół dekady, turystyka stała się głównym źródłem przychodów. W roku 2007, ponad 8 380 000 turystów odwiedziło Malediwy.
